The Arts NOW  Project

The Arts NOW Project:
Arts NOW is a project that began in early 2012, seeking to address the lack of local infrastructure, funding and exhibition opportunities for local artists in the Antigonish area and to develop long term development plan for northeastern Nova Scotia’s first officially registered artist-run centre.

What is an artist-run centre?
Artist-run centre is a term used to describe an artist initiated and managed gallery or public art space. ARCs in Canada began to develop in the 1960’s and since that time have become an important part of the Canadian art community. ARCs focus on allowing creative control to remain in the hand of the artist rather than having the artist constrained by the demands of a commercial gallery system and market. Unlike commercial galleries, ARCs follow the not-for-profit organizational model, meaning they do not charge the artists or the public for the chance to produce, exhibit, and view artwork in reasonable facilities. This model allows ARCs to establish a different type of viewing experience than commercial galleries. ARCs typically (but not always) focus on displaying contemporary artwork from local, regional, and international artists as well as lectures, film series, installations, and other performances together in one space, allowing the community to experience a wide variety of artistic and creative practice.

What is ASAP?

ASAP is a registered non-profit society governed by a board of individuals representing a wide variety of the arts community. Drawing on a network of over fifty professional and emerging artists, as well as other professionals from the cultural sector, ASAP is dedicated to the promotion of the work of local and regional artists both within the community as well as the national network of artist-run  centres and galleries.  Through the Arts NOW project, ASAP to expanded the creation and presentation of contemporary art throughout northeastern Nova Scotia through exhibitions, residencies, and special educational events.
